Sourcing Obsolete Components Without Getting Burned
Ohmni Sourcing Desk · 14 Jul 2026 · 5 min read
End-of-life parts can stop a production line. Here is a practical playbook for finding them while avoiding counterfeits.
Every long-lived product eventually meets an end-of-life notice. Whether it is an industrial controller, medical equipment or a legacy defence board, finding an obsolete part quickly and safely is a skill of its own.
A practical checklist
- Start with authorised distributors and the manufacturer's last-time-buy stock
- Ask for traceability: date codes, lot codes and certificates of conformance
- Inspect packaging, markings and leads, and test samples when you can
- Qualify drop-in or pin-compatible alternates in parallel
- Consider harvested parts from tested, verified sources for repair use
The counterfeit problem
Counterfeit and remarked parts are still a serious risk in the broker market. A trustworthy sourcing partner will be open about where parts come from and what inspection was done, and will never sell an unverified part as new.
