Desktop 3D Printing for Rapid Prototyping: A 2026 Primer
Ohmni Makers · 29 Jun 2026 · 6 min read

Faster printers, engineering-grade filaments and better slicers have made going from idea to hand-held prototype a matter of hours.
High-speed desktop printers with input shaping, multi-material systems and better slicing software have made prototyping much faster. Something that used to take days can now often be in your hand the same afternoon.
Choosing the right process
- FDM: fast, affordable, great for enclosures, brackets and jigs
- Resin (SLA/MSLA): fine detail and smooth surfaces for small parts
- Engineering filaments: PETG, ABS/ASA, nylon and carbon-filled blends for functional parts
Design tips that save iterations
Design with wall thickness, overhangs and tolerances in mind from the start. Add fillets to stress points, orient parts for strength and use test coupons to dial in press-fits before printing the full part.
Ohmni Makers, launching soon at makers.ohmni.in, will combine printing services with component sourcing, so your enclosure and the electronics inside it come from one place.
